Points to look for when considering a UK built Contessa 26
It is always advisable to have a survey before purchasing, but have an initial look at the general condition of the boat. The list below highlights points specific to the Contessa 26. Most are easily remedied on a DIY basis if you have the time. Some are dealt with elsewhere on this site (see the members area) and also on the forums on the Contessa26 Facebook page which is independent of the Association.
Pre 1972 boats (with narrow cockpit coamings)
These boats had a lower cockpit which was not self draining. To avoid flooding when the boat is not in use a cockpit cover should be fitted. Alternatively, an expensive self-draining modification which will involve cutting out and raising the cockpit floor will solve the problem.
Engine
If the boat already has a recently installed Beta or Yanmar diesel engine this is a real plus point. Check general condition, mountings and exhaust water trap.
Osmosis
Check the hull moisture levels. If the hull has not been epoxy treated already it probably should be done. The keel is of encapsulated iron. Tap along the sides to see if there are any voids. These can be drained and backfilled with epoxy. See Tips and Tricks for more info.
Gelcoat
Check the condition
Gas installation
The gas installation must be changed to drain over the stern.
Standing rigging
Should be replaced if more than 10 years old.
Windows
If the windows are leaking, they should either be serviced and refitted with new inner linings or replaced with new windows and inner linings fitted. See Tips and Tricks in the Members area of the site for more info.
Rudder bearings
Rudder and rudder fittings should be checked. Old rudders are often waterlogged which adds weight to the stern. Dry out and refinish or replace.
Coachroof
The mast is deck stepped and supported on a laminated beam that runs athwartships. Look for signs of cracking in the gelcoat inside and out. Check shroud and stanchion bases are secure and watertight. If replacing shroud plates, new cranked plates can be obtained from Jeremy Rogers Ltd. These give a better angle for the lower shrouds.
Interior
Look for stress cracking inside the coachroof either side of the companionway. Check attachment of all bulkheads to hull.
